Deep in the Everglades, outside of public scrutiny, the United States has built a concentration camp.
We’re deliberate in our word choice here. It’s a concentration camp. It has been called as much by an expert on concentration camps - Andrea Pitzer, author of One Long Night: A Global History of Concentration Camps. She's not alone. It meets every definition - "mass civilian detention without real trials, targeting vulnerable groups for political gain based on ethnicity, race, religion or political affiliation rather than for crimes committed."
Built on Indigenous land, the Everglades Concentration Camp was hastily constructed in eight days despite Indigenous protests and environmental concerns. Since it’s been opened and filled up, our worst fears about what would take place within have come to pass. Various testimonials from inmates and Congressional representatives who’ve seen the facility report horrific stories of inhuman treatment and torture.
Detainees forced into crowded cages that look like dog kennels in large numbers, no access to running water, and continuous exposure to the environment of the Everglades, including constant mosquitoes inside the facility, sewage flooding when it rains, and the facility itself surrounded by alligators and snakes. One man reported being chained to the ground, left in the sun and heat for hours with no water.
Latest reports indicate that there are 400 people detained in this cruel prison without any due process or ability to reach a lawyer.
The creation of this concentration camp is a reflection of the growing disregard for human rights and the continuous dehumanization of immigrants, a central component of this fascist regime’s ethnic cleansing program. The appearance of such brazen abuse is a surefire sign that the United States is well along the path to dictatorship. This abomination cannot be tolerated.
It must be closed immediately.
Sign today to send a message to your member of congress demanding they open an investigation into the ongoing human rights abuses at the Everglades Concentration Camp, and to use every means at their disposal to shut down this facility, and hold accountable every single person responsible for the crimes committed there.
